DOWN WITH LEADERSHIP!

There is nothing wrong with leadership in and of itself. It is a critical part of ensuring that organisations have clarity of purpose and direction. The problem is that leadership has become associated with visioning, strategising and creating clarity where there is ambiguity. What has been left behind, by comparison, is the art of being a great boss which has been relegated to the sidelines in terms of importance.

Holidays are meant to be an opportunity to get away from the pressures of day to day life, but millions of people are unable to leave their work behind. A survey by Stark Brooks Associates, a recruitment consultant, showed 97% of holidaying business people took their mobile phones and 68% either a laptop or a Blackberry. Just over a third would not consider staying in a resort without wireless access.

Well, if you read the newspapers and watch the news, you might think so. This week’s spectacular defeat is a very public failure but fundamentally the issue is about a team failing to perform at its best.

Why is it that some teams are able to produce collectively more than their individual abilities would suggest and yet some teams filled with talented individuals struggle to meet even their own most pessimistic forecasts?

FIT NOTES REPLACE SICK NOTES

GP sick notes have been replaced by 'fit notes' with effect from 6th April 2010. Previously a GP's sick note would simply state what condition an individual was suffering from, and whether they were fit for work. The new fit note aims to provide more information about how the condition affects the individual, and how they might return to work, with appropriate support from you their employer.
